Proofs…the finest Kennedy half dollars ever made!Just days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in late 1963, Congress authorized the Kennedy half dollar as a tribute to his unique place in American history. The first coins were released in March 1964, and they were so popular that banks could not keep up with the demand. Even today, the Kennedy half dollar still holds a special mystique among collectors.
But what most Americans don’t know is that in addition to the small number of coins released into circulation in the 20th century, an even smaller number of coins were struck for inclusion in the annual Proof Sets that were made available only to an elite group of collectors.
The reason so few proof coins were made is that they were struck using a time-consuming technique that created a spectacular finish, setting them apart from regular coins. Each coin was struck at least twice on a brilliantly polished coin blank, producing distinctive frosted high-relief images and mirror-like backgrounds. It’s no wonder that collectors who know about these coins dream about owning them…or that so few collectors are able to fulfill their dreams.
