To celebrate the coin’s 35th anniversary, the U.S. Mint revealed a new reverse showing a dramatic flying eagle — the first design change in the coin’s history. Incredibly, the last original-design coin and the first new-design coin were both made for limited periods in 2021, marking the only time the coin has been struck with two different designs in the same year.
