When famed sculptor Adolph A. Weinman designed the breathtaking Walking Liberty Half Dollar in 1916, he turned to a beloved French coin design for ideas: La Semeuse (“The Sower”), which was a symbol of French liberty and freedom. Weinman gave the design a uniquely American twist, changing the peasant girl sowing the seeds of liberty into Lady Liberty enlightening the world and spreading freedom.
This set includes an original Walking Liberty Half Dollar, which was struck at the U.S. Mint in 90% silver from 1916 to 1947…along with the largest silver version of La Semeuse, the 83.5% silver 5 Francs coin that was last made in 1969 and that is about the same size as the U.S. half dollar. Each large silver coin is a treasured collector’s item in its own right, and together they make a rarely seen set of unprecedented meaning, beauty and intrigue.
Remarkably, both coins in this set are in the same brilliant uncirculated condition as the day they were struck. Every fine detail is beautifully preserved — and when seen side-by-side, the similarities are striking.
